ECOnsider This: Lemurs need to keep cool in the Florida heat.
Although lemurs’ endemic home is in Madagascar, known for its tropical climate, rain forests, and hot temperatures, it is important to provide ways for them to keep cool…munching on frozen fruit like grapes and strawberries is a favorite for Malbec, a brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus)!
Lucy, a collared lemur (Eulemur collaris) enjoys fining frozen grapes inside an enrichment item – in this case a plastic egg.
Merlot, a brown lemur (Eulemur fulvus) found some frozen strawberries. Placing the frozen treats inside an enrichment item like the eggs provides stimulation and engagement for lemurs in addition to a way to keep cool!
Tsikey and Ravena, a pair of red ruffed lemurs (Varecia rubra) enjoy some frozen treats at the lemur habitat domes in LCF’s forests. Despite the fact that Myakka City, Florida, home of LCF’s lemur conservation habitats, and Madagascar both have a subtropical climate there is a difference in humidity and rainfall. With temperatures expected to reach the upper 80’s F this week in Florida we served the first frozen treats of the season!
